WIAA State Hoops to the Resch Center?
JSOnline WIAA accepts GB proposal
Is the WIAA really going to move the High School Boy’s and Girl’s State Basketball Tournament to Green Bay and the Resch Center? It sure looks like a good possibility, so let’s discuss, from the perspective of CCWriter who has been attending the state boys tournament since he was 10 years old. CCW grew up about 20 miles from the FieldHouse in a little town called Marshall. In 1st grade 1981, ShaggyDog, Petey Pete, and CCW made a pact, a contract, a commitment that no matter what, we were taking the Cardinals to the FieldHouse by the year 1992. Meanwhile we attended State games as youngsters, watching Milwaukee Washington dominate the barn awaiting our own arrival. That’s no bullshit, that all really happened and the commitment, the work, all of that came true aside from the part where CCW had to move away, but all the other stuff did come true. Weird how moments, pieces of life, that shouldn’t matter anymore still matter. What if , ______? So let’s get down to it, let’s talk about location. Madison or Green Bay?
Honestly, I don’t think it would be a bad idea to mix it up and play elsewhere. Madison and UW have apparently taken the event for granted, much like a lot of things. They have a lot going on and it seems as though these HS tournaments are a burden to the University and its facilities. Green Bay is rolling out the red carpet. Seems like a no brainer. Green Bay undoubtedly has the facilities and amenities to host, given the Resch Center is across the street from Lambeau. Playing the tournament at the MECCA (US Cellular) is a bad idea, Bradley Center? probably doesn’t work based on other shit going on there, and going back to the FieldHouse? Nostalgic, sure, but modern it is not. The Resch Center really does seem like the right place. Is there anywhere else that can house about 10,000 and handle the hotel traffic of 28 teams and their town load of fans? Yes, the little towns will bring more than the big towns! Easily. Another story, but small town hoops is where it is at folks. Far more team and family oriented and these kids play together for years before they even get to HS, mark my words, the small schools will be better than the big ones in years to come. There are a few exceptions, but it requires the youth program to filter in to ONE high school. Think Germantown, not West Bend.
Anyways, LB.com will be covering HS basketball as we head to the State Tourney 2012. We’ll break down the brackets and provide the insight on who to watch. Tell us your story, where you from? and who is the dark horse, who will bring home the gold ball in your area or division? Can anyone beat Germantown in D-1? How far can Tokoto single handedly carry Falls? How good is this Matt Thomas kid from Onalaska (uh, he’s good, real good)? Can a sophomore from Marshall take the Cardinals back to the promise land? Will Sun Prairie be a Cinderella story?
So many angles, so many great teams and players. You want cheap entertainment? HS Hoops is where its at…
UPDATE**
CCWriter was moments away from predicting Germantown would not win the State Title based on Junior Indiana recruit, 6’10″ Luke Fischer, not having played since January. Well, as of last night, he’s back and therefore, I’ll be surprised if they don’t win every game throughout the State finals by 20+ points. Serious, they are that good.
More to follow…–CCWriter
