James Jones : What’s his worth?
It’s been widely reported that GREEN BAY PACKER JAMES JONES is on the trading block.
To this Packer fan and many more, this makes a “hellofalotta” sense to me and quite a few us in Packer nation that see James “slippery hands” Jones as a non-essential and borderline questionable piece of the Packer dynasty.
The cupboard is loaded, we committed over 1 million bucks to the dancing queen, we have to make room for Cobb and Gurley, and Jer-Fich needs touches. Oh yeah, we have pro-bowlers in Jennings and Nelson. OK, trade him already before I pass out here.
So, what is he worth on the open market?
As the 4th maybe 5th option on a high potent offense he had 38 rec, 635 yards and 7 touch downs. He’s 28 and has never had a significant injury. His salary is cap friendly. So his trade valued is not fractured in anyway. He still has the magical “potential” label where a team could see him as their #1 (say Dolphins) or their #2, say Houston.
Let’s look at some recent wide receiver trades.
Lee Evans was traded for a 4th rounder from the Bills to the Ravens. Evans was the #1 with the Bills and sucked arse with the run dominant Ravens. Evans, in 9 games last year didn’t have a TD and only had 7 more catches than me. The year before Evans had worse stats than Jones. Granted different offense and different roles, but a good base line.
Brandon Lloyd who I am not going to analyze because a) my ADD won’t let me and b) he sucks and c) we are comparing apples and oranges (roles, Qb, etc). Anyways, Lloyd was worth a fifth when he was traded to Denver to St. Louis. He’s old and had one fluky big year.
How about Brandon Marshall? Marshall is a much different talent and was worth 2 second round picks that the Dolphins got in trade with the desperate Bears. Jones is not Brandon Marshall, then again Marshall is a head case and Jones has been a great teammate.
So randomly compiling all this stuff, I say James Jones is worth nothing less than a 3. And a 3 to Mr. Ted Thompson is gold. He might even be worth more, say a 2nd and a long snapper.
Pull the trigger Ted… get what you can and make room for more balls for Cobb and the crew.

The Driver Deal makes this totally believable. Another angle that I look at (though I doubt it) but does this maybe open the door for Jennings to be traded/not resigned at the end of the year? Thompson doesn’t give many 3rd contracts and after this season, Jennings is up and could be looking at Big Money. With Rodgers, Matthews, Raji and others up the next couple years…I think it could be something to keep in the back (DEEP DEEP DEEP BACK) of your mind!
I made a prediction three weeks ago that Driver and Jones will not make the 53 man roster. I stand by my prediction. They didn’t pay Gurley starter money to be on the practice squad to take a chance….they know that he needs to be on the field.
Because of the Rodgers/Jennings chemistry, I think Ted would make an exception to his 3rd contract rule.
